When Should I Hire a Private Coach??

This is a question that has been asked by many parents over the years. Hopefully, by reading this you can make an informed decision as to what will be the best for your skater.

In order to help answer this question, it is important to understand the benefits of having a private coach. A private coach will significantly improve the quality of your child’s skating because they will spend much needed one-on-one time with the skater focusing each lesson on the specific needs of each individual skater.

As skaters progress through the canskate and starskate programs group lessons become less frequent and more independence is encouraged. A private coach will ensure that the skater is progressing through the program appropriately and successfully.

Once a skater enters the starskate program (pre-primary, primary, advanced primary and intermediate) a private coach is strongly recommended. By having a coach, skaters can enter competitions, take Skate Canada tests, and learn new and more advanced figure skating elements. It is important to note that before a skater moves into the advanced primary program they are required to have a private coach. However, a parent may wish to sign their skater up with a private coach as early as Pre-Canskate.

We are lucky to have such an outstanding coaching staff at the HSC. Our coaches are nationally certified through the NCCP (National Coaches certification program) and have extensive backgrounds as skaters themselves As a parent, you
can choose who you think will best suit the needs of your skater. Just simply approach that coach at the rink or call them to set up a lesson schedule.

Here is a list of the HSC professional coaches who are available to take on your skater. As coaches’ private lesson rates and coaching qualifications vary, it is a good idea to discuss this with the coach you decide to hire.

I don't think most teachers realize how much impact they have.
